“The Shield Seasons 1-7 DVD Box Set” (Paramount), the last film by Howard Hawks, is a reprise of previous laconic collaborations “Rio Bravo” and “El Dorado” with John Wayne as a Union Colonel who joins forces with former Confederate soldiers Jorge Rivero and Chris Mitchum after the war to track down a Union traitor. Jack Elam gets the Walter Brennan coot role here and runs with it, playing it ornery and sly, while Hawks’ gift for discovering lovely young actresses shows itself in Jennifer O’Neill as Shasta Delaney (another great Hawks character name), though Sherry Lansing is more engaging in a smaller role.
While Justified Season 1 DVD Box Set is slowing down, he is still the professional’s professional and shows it in the opening train robbery and the finale shoot-out, clearly a variation on “Rio Bravo,” but then his career has been built on variations on his favorite themes and dramatic structures. This time, however, he also measures the weight of age on Wayne, who is walking slower and bulkier. He has no less confidence or command than before, but neither is he romantic material any more. That’s left to the younger, prettier, less compelling members of the group. Victor French and David Huddleston co-star. No supplements.
